Broadband Frequently Asked Questions

Product

Can I have more than one ADSL extension running from the splitter?
No. The splitter or 'front plate' (used on Home 500 and Biz 500) is part of the BT Equipment. Only one splitter/modem/router set is provided.
As part of the Home 500 Plug & Go and Business 500 Plug & Go, two ADSL filters are provided instead of the splitter, and the ADSL modem can be plugged in any ADSL filter connected to a phone socket.

Can a customer change from one product to another (re-grade)?
If you would like to re-grade then please call our customer support team on 0870 2330800.

Can you still 'Tunnel'?
Tunnelling is possible using either USB or Ethernet versions of the service. Although the bandwidth is asymmetric, and therefore inappropriate for tunnelling, it does not prevent the necessary protocols operating to allow tunnelling between hosts.

What does contention ratio mean?
Contention ratio means that the customer shares bandwidth between the local telephone exchange and the ISP. This enables us to provide our services at a lower cost to the customer.

What is the difference between broadband and a leased line?
ADSL is similar to a leased line in the respect that it gives some permanent Internet access at fixed cost without affecting your telephone line.
However it differs in two main aspects:
1. A leased line is a symmetric dedicated service (the same upstream & downstream bandwidth) creating a permanent connection between your premises and the Internet
2.ADSL is a contended service

Can I use remote access software to administer my computer?
Although not supported by the technical helpdesk, customers that are using the USB (Home 500 and Biz 500 USB) or no-NAT products will be able to use remote access software to administer their computer. However this will not work with the NAT product due to the address translation.

My ADSL line is not working - how do I check if the problem is with the telephone line?
If you have two telephone lines, try plugging your telephone into the ADSL line socket - if you do not get a dialling tone - you must report the fault to 151 (home customers) or 154 (business customers) as there is a problem with the line.
If you don't have an extra line to do the testing or if you do get a dialling tone, please contact the Technical Helpdesk for assistance on 0870 2330800.
