Runfold resident's quest for Broadband service
- 30th August (Surrey and Hampshire Herald Group)
A RUNFOLD resident is appealing to BT Cellnet to upgrade its
equipment at the village's telephone exchange to improve the
speed and efficiency with which local people can use the internet.
Computer consultant Richard Hollway, who lives off Compton
Way, uses the internet extensively when working at home. He
is stepping up his campaign to make the phone company aware
of demand in the village for the upgraded "broadband"
internet connection which is high speed and capable of transmitting
both television signals and internet data at the same time.
"At the moment, I have to access the internet via an ordinary
telephone line and it is very slow. It takes ages trying to
send files and is a huge disadvantage for local businesses,
not to mention Barfield School. "Many town centres including
Farnham have been upgraded, but sadly rural areas such as Runfold
have been ignored."
Mr Hollway has been in direct contact with BT Cellnet and has
been told that it is a "commercial decision" not to
upgrade Runfold. However, if the village can prove there is
a sufficient level of demand for the service, the decision may
be reversed. "BT say it would cost at least a quarter of
a million to upgrade the service, but they need to be aware
of the demand in the village.
"I have been sending letters, but the best way is for
people to register their interests to their internet service
provider by logging on to www.B.T. com/broad band. Already 17
people have registered over the weekend."
