Quest for Broadband finds ally
- 6th September (Surrey and Hampshire Herald Group)
A FARNHAM internet service provider has come to the aid of Runfold
residents who have been appealing to BT Cellnet to provide the
village with a more efficient internet service.
The Herald reported last week how Runfold resident and computer
consultant Richard Hollway had set up a campaign to make the company
aware of demand in the village for the upgraded "Broadband"
internet connection.
Broadband is ten times faster than the current connection and
capable of transmitting both television signals and internet data
at the same time.
Another benefit of Broadband is that it is always switched on,
eliminating the wait to connect to the web, and does not affect
the service of the phone line, allowing the user to make and receive
calls while on line. If the village can prove there is sufficient
demand, with at least 200 residents registering their interests
to their Internet Service Provider (ISP) the service may be provided.
After reading the article the managing director of internet provider
Link Connect, Ron Brand, has offered his company's support. "When
a local person makes a pre-registration with their ISP as advised,
many ISPs are taking a long time to log that registration with
BT. "Link Connect promises that all pre-registrations received
will be communicated to BT immediately, hopefully cutting the
time it takes for the village to meet the required level of demand
for BT to provide the service."
Mr Brand's company will be offering a range of special deals to
encourage local people to pre-register and every time a home user
or business joins Link Connect, the company will make a donation
to a local school selected by the account holder.
Mr Brand is now in touch with Mr Hollway to discuss the possibility
of establishing links.
